These studio professionals bring their experience and expensive, modern technology to bear on their work; they're scrupulous and fastidious. Then they hear their work played back on an iPod through a pair of plastic ear buds. Ask Ramone how it feels to hear his work on MP3s, and he doesn't mince words.

"It's painful," he says.

ain't it the truth ..why anyone downloads mp3's and use an ipod is beyond me..especially for live recordings...
i'll never own an mp3 player ..ever....

With due respect, I use only wavs on my Ipod, and with good earphones, it knocks the socks off anything else around, short of dB blasting my neighbors off the block with my jbls, etc...

Just thought I would mention it...but otherwise, I take your point. Well put.

Hey huntr--I really am an idiot when it comes to this, and when I got into accumulating all my DEAD it came as SHNs which are now WAVs for use. Do I recall right (Tiger probably explained it to me, but I are dumber than dirt) that flacs are the replacement for WAVs? Is that what I could've gotten my, eg, download files from the DEADstore, as (I seem to recall them being there)?

Hope you don't mind some dumbass questions.

flac is the new .. and arguably better... shn is more like it ..

there is a company that makes 3rd party firmware for many mp3 players that will play back in the compressed flac format

this software is called rockbox .. should be #1 thing in a google search

Ah--so is part of it that the flacs are smaller, like the shns, BUT ready to play without 'expansion?' If so, I get it.

Sorry to bug you like this...

Hey--ain't it too bad about the OOne in the voting? [Hook]

thats what "rockbox" does .. it allows the flac files to play without "decoding" them to wav

Its a Lossless compression format like shorten but newer .. and some say more efficient

most new sources are Flac rather than shn nowadays

"Free Lossless Audio Codec"
______________
yea, TO1... fuck that game tho .. I only played to knock Terrapin out

I knew TO1 was next ..

final 3 should have been

St. S
DS
TO1

I dig Eyes but... c'mon

Huh? No, seriously, I follow completely. Thanks for the time and effort. Good to know.

Yeah, I am with you 100%; but of course, I am a 68 freak, and so the OOne I 'vote' for, and even the StSt, is pre 71...

I think of those as amazing songs in that period. I know I already mentioned it 'over there' but if you have a chance, check on the OOne from 12-29-68. Jerry is unreal. Energy, man...energy. It drips with it.

you can afford a home sound system to match the quality of a recording studio? good for you! you know very well that 95% of the consumers out there can't. ;)

you're one of the lucky ones that care enough about the quality and passion audio engineers put into their work.

me, i'm half and half. i enjoy quality, but i also enjoy using my other senses (sight=photography / taste=good food) so my $s gets evened out and thus the quality of what my senses would've experience are diminished. but i'm okay with that.

majority of people are happy with 128kb/sec. compressed audio. i'm not. i prefer 320kb/sec, mostly because i've compared it back to back with professional recordings and yes there's a difference but not so much that i'll invest thousands of dollars.
